I have been very blessed to have had the opportunity to visit so many church history sites, both modern and ancient. However, I still have one church history site that has yet to be check off my list...I think my next trip will be to Kirtland.
I am taking a Church History Institute class and this past week we talked about what took place while the saints were in Kirtland, OH. Elder M. Russell Ballard gave a CES fireside in 1994 entitled "Our Kirtland Legacy." He said, "It has been said that we may yet discover that Kirtland is our most significant Church history site."
Elder Ballard lists the following to describe just how important Kirtland is to the Church:
- Reveled basically all the priesthood offices that we have in the church today
- Schooling period for the leaders of the Church
- About 1/2 of the revelations recored in the Doctrine and Covenants were revealed there
- School of the Prophets began
- Joseph made his Bible translations
- Pearl of Great Price was largely translated
- First edition of the Doctrine and Covenants was printed
- More heavenly manifestations and appearances occurred in Kirtland than any other place

I loved Kirtland. I could definitely use another visit. Maybe a 2 day instead of a 1 day. Am I invited?
